The population will continue to grow, creating as many new mouths to feed, while the usable agricultural land continues to decrease. Food production and consumption have to be considered in a broader context, combining agriculture, energy, and food safety.

Food security is becoming a national priority in many countries, and access to resources is a real challenge.

The Southern Cone in South America enjoys abundant supplies of water and arable land, and an ideal climate for double‐cropping, as well as a stable legal environment, good infrastructure and relatively low land prices compared with those in the northern hemisphere (Europe, USA). The region is a major producer and exporter of soft commodities, not dependent on subsidies.
